Takeaways from the UX 100 Day Challenge

I recently embarked on a 100 day journey that included a mini sketchbook, a pen, & my brain. Here are some of my takeaways.

Being a fresh face doesn’t have to be intimidating.

As a relatively new UXer/Content Strategist, I knew there was a lot to learn about the industry. From wireframes & prototyping to content mapping & empathy maps, it was evident that this UX sketching practice was crucial for my growth in the industry. Although it may feel like you are bombarded by all the things you should or need to know, introducing yourself into a new space like UX can be more inviting than intimidating. No one really expects too much from you (yet).

Challenges teach you to see things in a new way.

Practicing the fundamentals of any discipline teaches you the heart of the subject. When you embody that challenge of practicing everyday, it not only teaches you how to utilize existing structures, but encourages you to build upon them in your own way.

Creating is a big component of growth.

Although I’d like to think of myself as being artistic, creating icons and sketches that represent one word, phrase or idea proves to be quite demanding. On one hand it trains your mind to think simply and linearly, but on the other hand, it encourages novel ideas for traditional solutions.

Not everything has to be done online.

What I really enjoyed about this challenge was that it gives you the freedom and even encourages you to practice offline. When I was doing it all I needed was my mini sketchbook and a pen to get started on my daily challenge. This daily habit reminded me that you don’t need much to be productive and creative.

As a whole, I learned a lot through this process. It allowed me to express ideas through a different format. I encourage anyone who’s interested to take on this challenge! Remember, even if you miss a few days, take some time to get back on track & you’ll find you get out what you put in.
